A movement beginning in the late 1960s in
abstract art and music towards a severely
simplified composition. In painting, it
emphasized geometrical and elemental shapes.
In sculpture, Carl Andre focused on
industrial materials. In music, large-scale
statements are based on layers of
imperceptibly shifting repetitive patterns;
its major exponents are Steve Reich and
Philip Glass. The idea of hypnotic repetition
is a feature of US music from the Balinese
transcriptions of Colin McPhee and the
rhythmic experiments of Nancarrow to the tape
music of Terry Riley (1935-) in about 1964.
